Biotechnology
The cooperation in biotechnology started in 1976 (DISNAT) and was reoriented in 2000 towards more applied research with the involvement of German industrial partners. The funds are raised by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF), in the past primarily supporting biotechnology research in Germany and at the Israeli partner institutions. For the cooperation period 2001 to 2004 funding amounts to about 2 mill. € now for both German and Israeli cooperation partners. On the basis of previous successful DISNAT cooperation, the new funding activity "German-Israeli Cooperation in Biotechnology – BIO-DISC" is designed to achieve industrial application of biotechnological know-how developed in Germany and Israel in the form of new products, processes and services. The BMBF intends to provide support to German industrial companies for establishing bilateral R&D collaborations with Israeli enterprises; the respective Israeli companies will be supported by OCS/MOITAL. In addition, universities and non-university research establishments in the two countries are called upon to participate in the collaborative projects (2+2 projects), as well as in joint feasibility studies by university or non-university research groups aimed at preparation for industrial R&D projects.
