Water Technology

The very successful bilateral cooperation in water technology has existed since 1974. The Israeli researchers were funded by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) with about 15 mill. € over the years, whereas the German partners were endowed with about 7.6 mill. €. The main focus of the research projects has been on
  • increasing the availability and quality of water
  • advanced municipal and industrial wastewater treatment
  • storage of wastewater and agricultural reuse
  • groundwater pollution
  • drinking water purification and supply
  • public-health-related aspects of the drinking water supply
  • sewage sludge treatment and utilization
  • integrated water resources management

In 1997 a multilateral German-Israeli-Jordanian-Palestinian Joint Research Project, was started and continued in a second phase until end of 2005. The project was mainly funded by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF), but also sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Techology (MOST).

The multilateral activities in the lower Jordan Rift Valley are now being continued within the BMBF’s international activities in Integrated Water Resources Management, based on the framework programme "Research for Sustainability" (see http://www.fona.de/eng/index.php). In July 2006 German, Israeli, Jordanian and Palestinian scientists started implementation of the new project "SMART – Sustainable Management of Available Water Resources with Innovative Technologies".

Call for Proposals

Proposals for joint projects can be submitted before 23.05.2010.

Young Scientists Exchange Program

Open call for young scientists for a training period in Israel or Germany for up to 6 months, but not less than 1 month. Funding will be provided to cover all necessary expenses of the applicant’s visit abroad.

IPSWaT – International Postgraduate Studies in Water Technologies

With this program the BMBF offers the opportunity for excellent students and young scientists from all countries to study at German universities with certain internationally oriented courses in the field of water technologies.
