Ein großer Teil der Menschen in Deutschland wünscht sich einer Umfrage zufolge eine »besonders enge Kooperation« mit Israel im Wissenschaftsbereich. In der Erhebung des Meinungsforschungsinstituts Civey im Auftrag des European Leadership Network (Elnet) sprachen sich rund 40 Prozent der Befragten für eine solche engere Zusammenarbeit aus. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HU)’s School of Engineering and Computer Science and Yissum, HU’s technology transfer company announced a new research partnership with Meta AI. This partnership stems from Hebrew University's efforts to strengthen the ties between academia and the tech industry. PhD students who are accepted into the program will have the opportunity to merge theory with real work experience, to gain a better understanding of emerging technologies and to develop new ones.

Water treatment and desalination are among the largest future markets in the field of environmental technologies. Manufacturers from Germany and Israel are world leaders in this segment and have been working closely together in research for decades. Around 110 leading water experts from both countries met in Dresden at the end of September to discuss current bilateral research and development projects on water technology. The conference proceedings are now available for download free of charge.

The German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and the Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS) wish to combine their strengths and establish a strong cooperation in cancer-related microbiome research. Both institutions agreed to establish a bridging division at DKFZ. Eran Elinav, Professor at WIS, will receive the status of a Visiting/Guest Scientist at DKFZ and will head the bridging division from beginning of 2019.

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) is establishing the Helmholtz International Research School HI-SCORE, which will be oriented towards solar energy research. To accomplish this, HZB is collaborating with the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot, the Israeli Institute of Technology (Technion) in Haifa, and three Israeli universities as well as universities in Berlin and Potsdam. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem has announced that its Board of Governors has elected Prof. Asher Cohen as the next President of the Hebrew University. Prof. Cohen will succeed Prof. Menahem Ben-Sasson, who led the University for the last eight years. The Israeli immunologist and cancer researcher Professor Yehudit Bergman of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HUJI), Israel, has been honored with the Helmholtz International Fellow Award for her excellent research. It is being discussed as a "milestone". For the first time, a German-Israeli research team has succeeded in devising a targeted method to control the process of bond formation between two atoms. Prof. Dr. Christiane Koch and Dr. Wojciech Skomorowski of the University of Kassel were involved in the research efforts. On the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and Germany, the presidents of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Freie Universität Berlin further expanded the two universities' extensive strategic partnership by signing a joint doctoral program agreement.
