German-Israeli Water Technology Cooperation – Call for Proposals 2021

Announcement of funding guidelines for German-Israeli research and development projects in the field of water technology within the framework of cooperation between the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Israeli Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST).

The German-Israeli water technology cooperation enters a new round. With a deadline of 7 October 2021, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Israeli Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) are again inviting researchers from both countries to submit applications for bilateral R&D projects in the field of water technology.

The overall goals of the cooperation are:

  • To improve the water situation in Israel and the surrounding area and/or Germany. Transferability of the results to comparable regions should preferably be ensured.
  • To facilitate access to new markets for Israeli and German enterprises in the water and environmental sector.
  • To support and strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the water sector as well as cooperation between science and industry.

For the 2021 deadline, applications are sought in the following research areas:

  • Multiresistant pathogens, genes or virus loads in waste water and surface water: tracking and counter-measures
  • Quantifying and mitigating the impact of persistent mobile pollutants and/or microplastics on drinking water resources and freshwater systems

The joint project proposals of the German and Israeli partners will be selected for funding with the help of external reviews by BMBF and MOST.

The current announcement, which is open until 7 October 2021, and the application form are available on the right hand side of this page and on the MOST website.

Please note: This year, the submission process for Israeli applicants includes two phases:

  1. Preliminary project outlines must be submitted by the researchers to the relevant official in the Institute's research authority, through the new online system  by 30 September 2021.
  2. The institute must submit the final application no later than 7 October 2021.

For German applicants, the deadline is 7 October 2021.

Other funding opportunities:

The bilateral cooperation between the BMBF and the MOST with annual calls for proposals on current research priorities in the field of water technology has existed since 1974. Young researchers also have the opportunity to apply to the Young Scientist Research Program (YSEP).

In 2020, a multilateral cooperation on water research in the Near and Middle East was additionally initiated with a corresponding announcement by MOST in Israel. The first projects of the MEWAC funding measure have now started.
