In 2018, the PRIMA (Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area) international funding initiative was launched. It aims to effectively address the challenges of the Mediterranean in terms of agri-food systems and water scarcity through research and innovation. The PRIMA calls 2024 were published on 25 January 2024.
A total of 19 countries in Europe and the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean, as well as the European Commission participate in PRIMA. Participating countries include 11 EU Member States (Germany, France, Greece, Italy, Croatia, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Cyprus) and 8 Mediterranean partner countries (Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey).
The total budget for PRIMA is just under 500 million euros over a 10 year period, with the European Commission contributing 220 million euros (from Horizon 2020) and the 19 participating countries 274 million euros in total. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) will contribute 20 million euros over the entire ten-year life span of the initiative.

On 16 January 2024, an international info day on the PRIMA Calls 2024 took place online. A video recording is available on YouTube:
Info Event Germany
On 31 January 2024, the project management agencies Projektträger Karlsruhe (PTKA) and DLR Projektträger held a national online information event on behalf of the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to provide information about participation opportunities, topics and application procedures. The event was aimed at interested applicants from science and industry as well as multipliers.
