Environmental research is one of the central areas of German-Israeli cooperation. The multilevel interministerial cooperation started back in the 1970s (water technology: 1973, energy research: 1974, marine research: 1977). Environmental research cooperation is increasingly shaped by global challenges, including climate change in particular.

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Israeli Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) have been jointly funding research and development projects in the field of water technologies since 1974, with annual calls for proposals on current focus topics. So far, 166 projects have been implemented, giving rise to trusting collaborative relationships between Israeli and German researchers.

Climate change has a major impact on the ecosystems and physics of the seas and oceans. Integrated research on these aspects therefore is very valuable for society. In 2010, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Israeli Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) decided to focus their marine research on examining the impact of climate change on ocean dynamics and coastal ecosystems.

Interministerial cooperation focuses on other topics of energy and environmental research, too, involving various different ministries on the German side. An energy partnership is to find solutions in order to master climate change. This cooperation takes place also in view of Israel’s goal of providing 30 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by the end of this decade.
