At the invitation of Israeli Education Minister Yoav Kisch, Bettina Stark-Watzinger, the German Federal Minister of Education and Research, travelled to Israel on 17 December 2023 together with a delegation from the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany (KMK).

The trip focused on the impact of the Hamas terror attack on Israeli society in general and on the Israeli education and research landscape in particular. With her visit, Stark-Watzinger expressed her unreserved solidarity with Israel.

Stops included the kibbutzes Kfar Aza and Nahal Oz. Both are located in the immediate vicinity of the Gaza Strip and were hit hard during the Hamas terrorist attack on 7 October 2023. Stark-Watzinger also visited an evacuation centre in the city of Herzliya.

The minister also held talks on the situation of scientists in Israel. Among other things, she met with President Professor Asher Cohen and with Israeli and German students at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. She also spoke with leading representatives of the Israeli scientific community, including the President of the Israel Academy of Sciences, Professor David Harel, and the Chairman of the Academic Committee of the Israel Science Foundation, Professor Daniel Zajfman.

A visit to the Yad Vashem memorial with a wreath-laying ceremony was part of the trip, too.
