The Umbrella Cooperation promotes collaboration between RWTH Aachen University, Forschungszentrum Jülich and the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. As part of the annual Umbrella Symposium, three young researchers were honoured with the Umbrella Award.
Razi Epsztein from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology received the award for his work ‘Targeting solute-specific selectivity in membrane separation’. Epsztein’s main research interest is membrane-based processes for water and wastewater treatment. The young scientist is particularly focussed on the development of ion-selective membranes.
This year’s RWTH Aachen University Awardee is Weihan Li. The engineer was honoured by the Umbrella Cooperation for his work on ‘Battery Analysis with Artificial Intelligence’. Li’s research focusses on the integration of artificial intelligence and physics in battery research. His field of interest ranges from the material to the system level.
The third winner of the Umbrella Award is Davis Thomas Daniel from Forschungszentrum Jülich. The young chemist was honoured for his contribution ‘Enabling sustainable batteries: Insights from magnetic resonance spectroscopy and machine learning-driven simulations’. His research interests concentrate on the characterisation of structure-function correlations and the mechanistic investigation of energy materials using a combination of experimental and computational approaches.
The work of this year’s Umbrella Award winners illustrates how young scientists are making a decisive contribution to the development of tomorrow’s energy supply. With their innovative approaches, they show how research can pave the way for sustainable energy systems.
