Established in 1983, the Umbrella Cooperation unites RWTH Aachen University, Forschungszentrum Jülich, and the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, fostering robust collaboration in science and technology. This strategic alliance was formalised through a cooperation agreement designed ‘to strengthen collaboration in science and technology.’ It has since been recognised as a significant catalyst for high-impact, cross-border research.

Since the cooperation’s inception, annual Umbrella Symposia have been a cornerstone of the collaborative efforts. Each year, one of the partner institutions hosts these symposia on a rotating basis. The Umbrella Symposium 2024 will be held at Forschungszentrum Jülich from 23 to 25 September. The event will concentrate on ‘Advancing Energy Materials with State-of-the-Art Analytics and AI.’

Since 2018, the Umbrella Award 2024 as been a significant highlight of each Umbrella Symposium. This prestigious award, valued at 5,000 euros, recognises outstanding researchers from each partner institution based on the symposium’s thematic focus. One laureate is selected for each of the three institutions.

The Umbrella Award is intended to support an extended exchange visit to Juelich/Aachen in case the awardee is from the Technion, or vice versa. The call is open to young faculty members, who have received their doctoral degree within the past 6 years.

One awardee per institution will be chosen who will be expected to deliver an award lecture during the exchange visit, and during the Umbrella symposium. Participation in the Symposium from 23 to 25 September 2024 at Forschungszentrum Juelich is a prerequisite for the award.
